We're seeking a highly motivated student for a 6-month internship or Master's thesis project starting Summer 2025.
Solidification Dynamics of TNT
Understanding the solidification dynamics of melt-cast explosives, such as TNT (trinitrotoluene), is crucial for optimizing their manufacturing process and ensuring consistent quality and safety. This master’s thesis or internship proposes a numerical and experimental investigation of the solidification behavior of TNT, focusing on the key factors influencing the solidification process.
Objectives and Methodology
- Numerical Modeling: Develop a numerical model to simulate the solidification process of TNT, focusing on heat transfer and phase change under controlled cooling rates.
- Review existing literature on the solidification of explosives and heat transfer phenomena.
- Develop a mathematical model incorporating heat transfer and latent heat release during TNT solidification, considering its thermal properties.
- Implement the model using a numerical solver (e.g., Python with NumPy) to simulate the solidification process under different cooling rates.
- Experimental Validation: Conduct experiments to measure the solidification kinetics of TNT under controlled cooling rates and validate the numerical predictions.
- Design and implement an experimental setup for melt-casting TNT under controlled cooling conditions.
- Utilize thermocouples to measure the temperature evolution during solidification at various locations within the TNT sample.
- Compare experimental temperature profiles with numerical predictions to validate the model.
Qualifications & Requirements
- BS in physics, chemistry, material science or similar
- Previous experience and solid understanding of numerical methods and modelling techniques, programming and data analysis
- Ability to design experimental setups including temperature measurement and data acquisition
We look forward to your application.
